College degrees in the modern world

Well, listening to Rush a week late (that seems to be par, lately) I heard a discussion of the Democratics’ plan to send everyone to college. A caller then suggested that a community college or technical school program would be more useful, and Rush came back to note that great success is possible without any sort of degree. I agree with him, but there was something he didn’t say that I think bears saying. Not only are there manifest opportunities for people with passion and vision today, but the level of actual educating done in colleges today is abysmal. Not only are there other options for success, but I would argue that college is a poor preparation for success for most people. This reflects crises throughout the educational system in the US, but that’s the subject of a different entry.
